About Fairfax, VA
From “Providence” to the County Seat, By Way of a Toll Road The City of Fairfax wasn’t always Fairfax. Virginia’s General Assembly established it in 1805 as the Town of Providence, built on 14 acres surrounding the newly relocated Fairfax County Courthouse, and residents commonly just called it “Fairfax Court House” for decades before the name officially changed in 1874. The town’s early growth was tied to the Little River Turnpike, which became the third toll road in America and the first privately owned one, linking the courthouse settlement to Alexandria’s port and cementing Fairfax’s role as a regional crossroads — a role its road network, now carrying far more traffic than any 19th-century turnpike operator imagined, still plays today.
